The U.S. Department of Energy is currently accepting proposals for transmission projects that would connect remote and isolated microgrids to each other or to existing transmission corridors in Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories.
ASU project leaders have already assessed 300 isolated communities to come up with the most suitable 75 sites for minigrids. Part of Xendee's work is calculating energy potential tailored to the specific needs of each individual community, as well as the system sizing for the minigrids.
A $5.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Renew America’s Schools funding program will finance construction of energy improvements to The Match High School and Career Center site. These include installation of a combined 165-kW solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system.
A new model for data center design uses microgrids to provide flexibility and clean energy that reduces grid stress. Other models focus on modular data center design and providing energy to the energy-hungry facilities directly from solar or nuclear power plants.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this week at Bimbo Bakeries’ Montebello location, marking the launch of microgrids at six of the company's California facilities. The microgrids are expected to provide around 20% of the combined electricity needs for the sites.
