Retroficiency, a Boston-based company pioneering the virtual energy assessment model, continues to expand, now with a large US military contract.

The military often serves as an early adopter that brings new energy technologies to scale. The Army and Navy contract with Retroficiency for 640 on-site energy audits signals growing interest in big data and intelligence platforms in building analysis.

Sain Engineering Associates (SEA) will use Retroficiency’s Building Intelligence Platform at military buildings in several regions worldwide over the next year.

“Retroficiency already has been selected to power more than a dozen U.S. utility funded commercial programs or pilots and is trusted by some of the largest energy service providers,” said Bennett Fisher, Retroficiency CEO and co-founder. “This new partnership with SEA broadens our footprint into the federal government market, proving our ability to meet and surpass the demands of the energy efficiency market.”

The Retroficiency audits are expected to play a big role in helping the Navy achieve a goal to make half of its buildings net-zero-energy by 2020.

“The Department of Defense and branches of the armed forces such as the Army and Navy have been tremendous advocates for energy efficiency. Because of the large building footprint these organizations have, there is a huge opportunity for energy savings,” said Butch Wallace, vice president of SEA’s Federal Sustainability Group.

SEA, an energy consulting firm and Inc. 5000 company, already has begun the audits and is scheduled to complete the project by third quarter 2014. Retroficiency expects its automated energy audit to cut project time and cost by 80 percent compared with conventional audits.

“The federal government market is looking for solutions that can move it beyond the traditional ‘one-building, one-measure’ approach to building energy efficiency,” Fisher said. “Retroficiency is providing that solution, opening the door to massive untapped efficiency savings potential.”

Retroficiency has evaluated more than 400 million square feet of building space worldwide to identify more than 2 billion kWh of annual savings since March 2011.
