A new model for data center design uses microgrids to provide flexibility and clean energy that reduces grid stress. Other models focus on modular data center design and providing energy to the energy-hungry facilities directly from solar or nuclear power plants.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office has made a conditional commitment to provide a $72.8 million partial loan guarantee for the development of a solar plus long-duration energy storage microgrid for the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians.
U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Cavazos, formerly known as Fort Hood, will use the microgrid to power critical services and infrastructure during outages and to reduce energy costs during ERCOT peak demand periods.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this week at Bimbo Bakeries’ Montebello location, marking the launch of microgrids at six of the company's California facilities. The microgrids are expected to provide around 20% of the combined electricity needs for the sites.
Cumulus data center campus owner and nuclear power plant owner Talen Energy agreed to sell the facility to AWS for approximately $650 million. It is directly connected to the Susquehanna Nuclear Station.

This new microgrid project will transform the electricity generation and distribution system in the town, ISU researchers and Montezuma Municipal Power & Light officials say. It will replace aging substations and provide Montezuma with its first two electric vehicle chargers.
New solar made up 53% of all electric generating capacity added to the grid last year, including utility-scale, community, residential rooftop and microgrid projects. It's the first time in 80 years that a renewable energy resource accounted for more than half of annual capacity additions.
The 1-MW solar plus storage microgrid will provide power to around 500 homes in Alexandra, a suburb of the capital city.
The U.S. Department of Energy is currently accepting proposals for transmission projects that would connect remote and isolated microgrids to each other or to existing transmission corridors in Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories.
