New York Power Authority Offers $800 Million in Financing for Energy Efficiency Tech

Feb. 7, 2014
The New York Power Authority has $800 million in financing to offer energy efficiency tech companies. The first deadline to apply is March 25. Here are details about the kind of technologies that the authority seeks.

The New York Power Authority has set a March 25 deadline for energy efficiency tech companies to apply for the first round of $800 million in available financing.

The authority issued a request for information Feb. 6 seeking commercial, but not yet widely deployed energy efficiency technologies for schools, offices, hospitals and other buildings.  NYPA will offer the money in more than one round in a rolling fashion over the next several years. This is the program’s first solicitation.

The program is part of an aggressive campaign by New York to increase energy efficiency and drive new tech jobs to the state. The state is offering $2.6 billion through 2015 from its energy efficiency portfolio standard.  (Also, see related story on $200 million in energy efficiency, demand response and combined heat and power projects planned by Consolidated Edison.)

NYPA will look at several factors in evaluating technologies:

  • Are they commercially available in New York and certified to meet industry safety standards and relevant code requirements?
  • Have they undergone previous technical performance evaluations?
  • Do they serve priority buildings – schools, offices, healthcare facilities, and other public building.
  • Do they increase building comfort, lower maintenance costs, reduce environmental impact, improve power quality and reliability, or offer other benefits.

All submissions received by the March 25 cut-off date will be considered at that time. NYPA will consider late submissions when it issues its next RFI, which it expects to do in summer 2014.

NYPA’s Energy Efficiency Innovation Collaborative, a public-private partnership, is managing the technology solicitation. The collaborative includes the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems, the Institute for Building Technology and Safety, and the Electric Power Research Institute.
