Pepco Energy Services, a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, has started construction on a comprehensive energy savings performance contract project for Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System in Mattoon, Ill. Set to be completed in December 2013, Pepco will guarantee at least 22 percent energy savings across 12 medical and office buildings – for $334,000 annual savings – through retrofitting lighting, upgrading building automation systems, improving the steam system, enhancing ventilation and other energy conservation updates. In addition to saving energy, the building update will dramatically enhance the area lighting within the buildings, which will improve the patient and work environment internally through improved air distribution, control and reduced infiltration.

The US Department of Energy and Georgetown University signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the Georgetown University Energy Prize, a competition to encourage innovative, replicable, and scalable approaches to reducing energy use in communities across the United States. Beginning in February 2014, US municipalities ranging from 5,000-250,000 residents will be eligible to compete with each other to reduce energy use by developing a long-term energy efficiency plan and demonstrating initial effectiveness and sustainability during a two-year period. The winning community will receive $5 million to further support community-based energy efficiency efforts.
