Turning Distributed Energy Resources into Grid Market Players in California

California is looking at a plan (DERP) to turn distributed energy resources into grid market players. What will this mean to microgrid developers? Is this a better approach to creating a distributed grid than New York state’s REV? Alex Morris, director, policy and regulatory affairs for the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA) answers these questions–and more–about the innovative California proposal.

“I think the DERP is a major step by the CAISO to help distributed energy resources participate actively in the grid, support reliability, and receive appropriate revenues,” he said. “The initial DERP is a good proposal, but we remain concerned that it won’t provide the full functionality we think the ISO and the state ultimately want/need.”
