The Power Systems Engineering Center at NREL is looking for an accomplished and dynamic candidate with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our cutting-edge research team. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in the modeling and simulation of electrical power systems with high levels of renewable energy. The candidate should have an established track record of research in the field of power systems planning and the ability to lead innovative research projects, proposals, and technical publications in the field of power systems. The successful candidate will be a principal investigator new methods and software for simulating power systems with high levels of renewable energy. This will include leading research in developing new modeling and simulation methods for power systems planning at various scales, including buildings, microgrids, distribution and transmission systems.

The successful candidate will join the Power System Design and Studies (PSDS) group within the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL and will be a strategic lead to guide the vision and strategy for power systems modeling and simulation research at NREL. The PSDS group conducts research on the impacts of renewable energy and other smart grid technologies at all levels of the power system, as well as in integrated multi-energy systems. PSDS works closely with other groups within PSEC to support the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with key stakeholders and partners to seamlessly integrate conventional and renewable sources, flexible loads, storage, and central and distributed generation enabling resilient, reliable, flexible, secure, sustainable, and affordable power systems at all scales. Job responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the strategy and direction of power systems modeling and simulation research at NREL
  • Collaborate with management and senior staff to develop new DOE and external partner business funding opportunities in the area of power systems modeling and simulation
  • Execute major projects and/or programs in a project leadership role
  • Represent NREL as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects
  • Demonstrate leadership in several areas of team, task, or project lead responsibilities
  • Demonstrate experience in management of projects
  • Provide reports on technical work and input to technical publications and presentations
  • Publish results in top technical journals/conference proceedings; present work at conferences, symposia, and review meetings
  • Interact with and provide regular project reports to government and/or industrial clients
  • Mentor junior staff
  • Follow all Environment, Safety, and Health policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment
  • Experience with multiple software simulation tools for modeling power systems such as PSLF, PSS/E, PLEXOS, OpenDSS, GridLab-D, etc.
  • Experience with computer programming and software development
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience . Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have background and expertise in multiple of the following areas:

  • Writing successful proposals to Department of Energy or other federal agencies
  • Working with utilities and independent system operators on renewables integration
  • Multi-Energy system modeling and simulation (power and gas, energy-water nexus, etc.)
  • Integrated transmission-distribution system modeling
  • Developing unit commitment and economic dispatch models
  • Line management of technical staff in a research environment
