In the context of the dynamic climate changes and continuously rising prices of conventional energy sources, now more than ever a necessity of urgent upgrade of the global energy systems with aim to make ready it for meeting the numerous future challenges comes to the fore. A Report of the International Energy Agency emphasizes that the renewables as the fastest-growing power generation sector will make up almost a quarter of the global power mix by 2018 and they will become more competitive than the nuclear and coal power energy.  The forecast for growth of 40 % over the next five years sounds very optimistic.

There are a number of challenges that needs to be solved before our vision of large-scale adoption of local DC electricity can be realized. For enabling faster adaption of the DC micro grid, concurrent advancements in three key directions are required: solving technical problems, development of proper standards, and institution of appropriate public policies in support of the local DC electricity infrastructure. Local DC electricity is an attractive economical approach to provide energy to over 2 billion people who have no access to electricity in order to meet their basic energy needs for day-to-day living. The objective of this conference is to bring together leading experts in these areas and engage them in a vigorous information exchange to advance the implementation of local DC power generation and storage with minimum transmission and distribution.

Temperature logging can be performed as part of an energy audit, during post-construction verification, or periodically throughout normal operation.

    • Energy storage as a long term resource in commercial energy management plans, storage project models, and energy procurement plans to support and compete with conventional generation, transmission and distribution resources
    • Integrating energy storage with renewable power and connecting to the grid to help operators and utilities turn intermittent unpredictable sources of energy into a more stable and dispatchable resource
    • Energy storage solutions to catalyze growth in the market for renewable energy by enabling its use in greater volumes and in new applications; reducing costs so new technologies can compete on economic terms
    • New business models to make, apply, and operate storage assets to allow the gird to work more reliably and cost-effectively while decreasing negative environmental impacts
    • Developing standards for modeling and regulatory reform and financing grid-scale storage technology in an uncertain marketplace
    • and more

The electric and gas utility industries are facing substantial changes. For decades, rising sales have contributed to increasing revenues and profits, but the combination of improved energy efficiency with the growing use of solar electric systems and other forms of "distributed energy" has reduced growth rates, which could lead to small declines in future sales. But these potential small declines will not lead to the kind of "death spirals" claimed by some industry alarmists, according to a new report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Still, the report finds that the utility industry is evolving enough that major changes to business and regulatory models are needed.

Join Elisa Wood, Steve Nadel from the ACEEE and speakers from Con Edison and the Regulatory Assistance Project to discuss findings from ACEEE's report and the landscape for the utility of the future.

The NAESCO Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting is a forum for a candid appraisal of the winds buffeting the utility industry and their impact on the energy service industry. The meeting will consider whether, in the face of overall declining load growth as well as the need for improvements to existing infrastructure and expanded system resiliency, ensuring utility profitability may require major business model changes going forward.  Also on the workshop agenda are sessions on upcoming changes in EPA regulatory oversight, the political landscape as mid-term elections change the profile of state and federal lawmakers, and major energy efficiency initiatives underway in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Attendees and speakers will challenge assumptions concerning the future of the intelligent grid (the SmartGrid), the course of development, and the opportunities for growth. If your organization wants to drive the “how” of the intelligent grid –  how to measure, manage and purchase power, either as a consumer or a provider –  you’ll find meaningful and profitable business opportunities.

This PGS seminar will focus on Microgrid commercialization, where renewable energy fits into this equation, and what’s on the horizon for investor owned utilities in this space.

Some estimates are that the US could lose one major utility per year due to the microgrid. This may be wildly optimistic but the competitive threat is real as microgrid technology gets better with energy efficiencies rising and costs coming down. The key breakthrough may be to allow Microgrid to participate in wholesale power markets. Click here to  learn more about attending.

Intelligent efficiency holds the promise of substantially reducing energy use while transforming many energy-using markets. To achieve this outcome will require collaboration among the efficiency, technology, and user communities. These communities are largely distinct, and few opportunities have existed to date for the energy efficiency and technology communities to interact. Past interactions have been limited to speakers from one community addressing assemblies of the other.
