Nuvve, e-Formula Collaborating on Microgrid, V2G Charging Project in Taiwan
A Taiwan electric utility is going to invest deeply into microgrids and other distributed and bidirectional charging technologies to bolster its defense against grid outages across the region.
A new deal with two electrification firms will unite bidirectional charging stations, microgrids and renewable energy there.
Transportation electrification technology firm Nuvve Holding Corp. and Taiwanese microgrid and energy management provider e-Formula will collaborate on developing what they called the first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) hub in the island nation. San Diego-based Nuvve will contract through an award from Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) to be compensated for grid services through its electric vehicle EVSE fast chargers and e-Formula’s stationary energy storage installations at the hub.
e-Formula will be project lead for the EV V2G Hub through its microgrid, energy management and battery technology expertise, according to the release. Nuvve will be responsible for technical project management and as key service provider.
“This project is not just a milestone for Nuvve and e-Formula but a leap forward for Taiwan’s EV infrastructure,” Nuvve CEO Gregory Poilasne said in a statement. “Our BIVe platform stands at the heart of this endeavor, showcasing the immense potential of V2G technology in revolutionizing energy management and EV integration.”

Two years ago, Taipower announced plans to invest more than $18 billion (U.S.) in grid resiliency and reliability projects over the next 10 years. The island power delivery system suffered a major outage in March 2022 due to a switch malfunction at a power plant which resulted in a chain reaction shutting down a substation and other power plants.
“The new project aims to enhance power grid resilience by deploying microgrids, rather than relying on major grids for electricity supply,” then Taipower acting chairman Tseng Wensheng said during a 2022 media briefing.
Taipower has allocated land in Hsinshu for development of the smart parking structure which will feature 325 parking spaces. The site will be equipped with a mix of V2G and V1G charging stations serving the Hsinchu metro area.
Nuvve will utilize the GIVe platform to manage the V2G and unidirectional V1G chargers, solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems on-site. The capabilities will include dynamic and bidirectional power management between EV batteries and the grid in Taiwan.
e-Formula previously has worked on microgrid and distributed energy projects such as Chiayi Xinyi, a service station which operations completely on renewable energy. Another e-Formula achievement include the projects Tainan Qianfeng, another service station with 100% renewable energy multi-source energy storage integration, and at Hualien Guangfu.
Nuvve is known in the U.S. for collaborating on EV charging electrification and stations with numerous end users, including school districts.
