A new solar plus storage microgrid in Costa Rica will provide resilient power and cost savings for an international component assembly and manufacturing company that makes sensitive components for industries from robotics to telecommunications.

The new microgrid will significantly reduce the costs created by power outages and other disruptions during the manufacturing of sensitive products and equipment, according to CleanSpark.

The microgrid is designed for Micro Technologies’ new factory, remotely located in San Jose, Alajuela Province of Costa Rica.

CleanSpark says that its controller and forecasting system, combined with Tesla’s battery energy storage, will provide abundant power, dependable backup power, and lower costs for the factory.

This is California-based company’s second microgrid in Costa Rica that pairs its controller system with Tesla battery storage.

The microgrid can also store or shift energy if outages or other disruptions occur during construction or when the factory is complete. Sensitive components intended for the robotics, automotive, aerospace, and telecommunication fields will be made at this facility, so smooth, consistent, stable energy operation is essential.

The combined new solar and energy storage system is grid-tied and intended primarily to offset utility energy costs. Its secondary function is to provide battery backup power when needed. The system consists of 480 kW of solar power and 558 kW from battery energy storage.

Zac Bradford, CEO of CleanSpark said, “this system provides renewable clean-energy, an objective stated by the country of Costa Rica, in their pursuit of being powered by 100% renewables.” He notes that the company and its partners enthusiastically support this goal and says that they look forward to using their technology to provide energy certainty, clean power, and lower costs throughout the region.
