Snohomish County PUD Chooses Doosan V2G Tech for Microgrid

Oct. 28, 2020
Snohomish County PUD will use Doosan GridTech’s V2G energy management system at its Arlington, Washington microgrid.

Snohomish County PUD (SnoPUD) will use Doosan GridTech’s vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy management system to control two V2G fleet charging stations at its Arlington, Washington microgrid.

The V2G system can charge a car and allow the vehicle’s energy to flow back to the grid for support during an outage. This pilot program explores the challenges of using a microgrid to provide renewable energy and grid support. The program’s goal is to evaluate the effects of this two-way interface.

The system will demonstrate how various clean energy technologies — solar, battery storage, and electric vehicles — work together to help renewable energy integration and grid resiliency when needed in disaster recovery.

Located about 40 miles north of Seattle, the self-contained Arlington microgrid remains connected to the utility’s grid network during normal operations. SnoPUD’s control center has been using Doosan’s distributed energy resources management software (DERMS) since 2017. The system will be updated to manage and dispatch the microgrid’s energy storage system and include electric vehicle charging stations.

The utility will study and test the challenges of using a microgrid to provide renewable energy and grid support. The microgrid needs to be ready to provide electricity during power outages due to storms, earthquakes or other natural disasters.

SnoPud energized the microgrid’s 500 kW solar array in July and will install the 1 MW/1.4 MWh lithium-ion battery Samsung energy storage system on November 12.

“Snohomish PUD has been collaborating with Doosan on smart grid enhancements since 2012 when we worked with them to design their distributed energy resource management system,” said John Haarlow, SnoPUD’s CEO/general manager. “We are excited to help our customers maximize the value of owning an electric vehicle as well as being able to leverage our systems. This study is the next level of progress to assure that we have the right systems in place to meet SnoPUD’s and our customers’ needs.“
