2 New York Toyota Dealerships Add Microgrids and EV Chargers

The microgrids will provide resilience and reduce energy costs for Sunrise Toyota and Sunrise Toyota North, both in Long Island. They will also power the dealerships’ new EV chargers.

Two Toyota car dealerships in New York are adding microgrids to provide resilience and reduce energy costs. The microgrids will be installed at Sunrise Toyota and Sunrise Toyota North, both on Long Island.

“We have experienced rising utility costs for years,” Jimmy Berg, dealer principal at Sunrise Toyota, said in a statement. “We are also increasingly sensitive to power outages that shut down our operations. This investment in our facility and business creates a strong investment case by controlling these costs. The resiliency benefits are an important bonus.”

The grid-connected solar and energy storage microgrids, installed by Sprocket Power Microgrids, will optimize the dealerships’ energy use, managing the amount of electricity pulled from or sent to the grid based on grid conditions and lowering utility bills by up to 90%, according to a statement.

During power outages, the microgrid will disconnect from the larger grid, powering operations with the on-site solar and energy storage system. The microgrid can also support the grid during times of peak demand by using power generated on-site and reducing the dealerships’ demand for grid electricity.

Sprocket Power recently installed microgrids at three other New York car dealerships: Vail GMC Hummer, in Bedford Hills, Croton Auto Park, in Croton-on-Hudson, and Yonkers Honda in Yonkers.

Dealership microgrids will include EV chargers

In addition to on-site solar, energy storage and microgrid controls, the Sunrise Toyota and Sunrise Toyota North installations will feature EV chargers from Kempower, an EV charging solutions manufacturer. These two projects are the first in a newly announced collaboration between Sprocket Power and Kempower.

The microgrid will be the primary source of energy for Kempower’s modular DC fast-charging solutions.

“This partnership with Sprocket Power enables us to offer a unique combination of smart charging technology and renewable energy systems, reducing both costs and environmental impact for our customers,” added Marcus Suvanto, vice president of sales at Kempower.
