The electric and gas utility industries are facing substantial changes. For decades, rising sales have contributed to increasing revenues and profits, but the combination of improved energy efficiency with the growing use of solar electric systems and other forms of "distributed energy" has reduced growth rates, which could lead to small declines in future sales. But these potential small declines will not lead to the kind of "death spirals" claimed by some industry alarmists, according to a new report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Still, the report finds that the utility industry is evolving enough that major changes to business and regulatory models are needed.
Join Elisa Wood, Steve Nadel from the ACEEE and speakers from Con Edison and the Regulatory Assistance Project to discuss findings from ACEEE's report and the landscape for the utility of the future.

Rapid advances in energy technology are challenging traditional utility business models, but also putting a new array of strategies, platforms and solutions in their hands. The need to manage the ever-growing volume and variability of solar at “grid-edge” is being met with a proliferation of new options for shifting and reducing loads, as well as ancillary services like frequency regulations. Mechanisms range from Automated Demand Response, to Virtual Power Plants, to grid-controlled substation and distributed behind-the-meter storage, to microgrids and avant-garde concepts like “transactive energy.” Dozens of new third party aggregator platforms and business models are arising targeting this segment.
This explosion of options is happening fast, in some cases explicitly driven by policy mandates (New York, California and Hawaii most notably). Larger IOUs and munis in these states are actively grappling with the new “toolkit”, but beyond their bounds this is a new territory for utility planners and engineers on the retail/customer/distribution grid side. As solar, and next storage, prices continue to fall, developing skills and resources for handling the higher variability will become ever more critical. This tutorial will provide a thorough survey of the gamut of options available now and in development. Top grid consultants and CTOs from platform third party “energy service” providers will explain how these novel business models and mechanisms are working today, and how they can best be leveraged going forward. The tutorial will provide a basic grounding for junior staff and executives and planners who are looking at the future resource and business strategy needs of utilities in a time of rapid change. The tutorial will also provide invaluable education for new entrants in the distributed grid segment, for new hires at solar, storage and DR companies, and anyone planning to develop or market new “clean energy service” products or platforms. The Beginnings of Great Ideas
Great ideas are the result of creativity, collaboration, and looking at a problem from an entirely new perspective. They are not limited by the boundaries of industry, and they are what move us to action, progress, and innovation. That’s why SEL created the Modern Solutions Power Systems Conference (MSPSC).
Whether you work in transmission, distribution, generation, planning, or regulation, your work both affects and depends on others—it’s crucial to have open communication between industries to generate and share ideas.
MSPSC is the conference that pushes you to think broader, think forward, and think differently about today’s critical issues affecting modern power systems. That’s what sets it apart.
The microgrid market is expanding rapidly: with estimated CAGR of 16-20%, it is projected to reach as much as $35.1B by 2020. Government programs to enhance resiliency of military, university, state and hospital (MUSH) facilities have driven the market for years, but the landscape is shifting. Communities and C&I customers are now demanding not only enhanced resiliency but the ability to meet sustainability goals, reduce demand charges and capture revenue by providing capacity and services to energy markets—opening up huge potential markets for advanced microgrids.
However, the market is in flux. Community microgrids may grow out of state resiliency initiatives, and DoD facilities are among the first to provide services to local utilities and power markets, but regulatory hurdles remain. The growth of solar + storage facilities in conjunction with C&I partners may hold the keys to developing the new business models needed for third party developers, utilities and facility owners to profit, but technical, economic and financeability challenges remain.
Infocast’s Microgrids Meet the Market Summit 2017 aims to bring decision makers together with C&I energy managers, microgrid integrators, utilities, ESCOs, control software providers, renewable energy and storage companies, EPCs and financiers to explore the opportunities, economics, business cases and technologies for deploying grid resiliency and advanced microgrids. To say that new things are happening on the grid might be the understatement of the decade. Despite the new administration’s preference for domestic fossils, progressive states like California and New York are steaming ahead on ambitious visions for electrifying generation and transit, and restructuring the way the distribution grid operates - at all levels - market and rate design, business models, interactions between utilities and third party aggregators, standards, and physical assets.
The specific list of topics will be tailored to reflect the interests and makeup of the enrolled participants, based on a survey 2 weeks prior to program start date.
- San Francisco, CA: 6/12 to 6/13
- Albany, NY: 6/15 to 6/16

The focus for 2017 is squarely on the implementation of both the New York REV and the new Clean Energy Standard. With the recent value of D and the DSIP rulemakings, and roll out of CES procurement plans and rate-making orders expected over the next few months, the New York market is poised to jump forward. However, such a market transformation can only be sustained if a delicate balance is established between market participants that retains utility shareholder value while creating economic returns for investments in DERs and renewable energy projects, and enables the reliable operation of transactive energy markets.
The 3rd New York Energy Revolution Summit will bring together utility, distributed energy resource (DER) providers, renewable energy, storage and other stakeholders to discuss how to create development processes that are workable and projects that are viable. Learn more.
