The electric and gas utility industries are facing substantial changes. For decades, rising sales have contributed to increasing revenues and profits, but the combination of improved energy efficiency with the growing use of solar electric systems and other forms of "distributed energy" has reduced growth rates, which could lead to small declines in future sales. But these potential small declines will not lead to the kind of "death spirals" claimed by some industry alarmists, according to a new report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Still, the report finds that the utility industry is evolving enough that major changes to business and regulatory models are needed.
Join Elisa Wood, Steve Nadel from the ACEEE and speakers from Con Edison and the Regulatory Assistance Project to discuss findings from ACEEE's report and the landscape for the utility of the future.

Intelligent efficiency holds the promise of substantially reducing energy use while transforming many energy-using markets. To achieve this outcome will require collaboration among the efficiency, technology, and user communities. These communities are largely distinct, and few opportunities have existed to date for the energy efficiency and technology communities to interact. Past interactions have been limited to speakers from one community addressing assemblies of the other.
